Secure your media with dynamic watermarking

One of the many ways to secure your content within MediaLab is through dynamic watermarking. Whether you’re sharing teasers, episode clips, promotional material, or any other media, dynamic watermarking allows you to add a visible, non-removable watermark that is unique to each recipient. This watermark, which includes the viewer’s email address, ensures that your content is traceable and protects your intellectual property, all while keeping the original file unaltered. With dynamic watermarking, you can confidently share your media, knowing it remains secure.

What is dynamic watermarking?

When sharing a file with MediaLab, you have the option to enable dynamic watermarking to protect your valuable content. By toggling this feature, we transcode your video to burn in the receiver's email address. This email address is only displayed in the transcoded version of your content, so your original file remains unaltered. The receiver will see their own email address as a burned-in watermark, making it clear who accessed the content.

This watermark is non-removable, so if content is leaked, it’s very clear who’s responsible. 🕵️

Other watermarking options

Since we like to offer our clients different options, dynamic watermarking is not the only way to watermark within MediaLab. Other options include a pre-burned watermark or an embedded watermark within the MediaLab player.

Burned-in watermark

Within your account settings, you can define, for example, your company's logo to be burned into your content. This is an effective way to ensure all your outgoing and shared content is watermarked, rather than having to apply file-specific watermarking.

MediaLab video player watermark

If you’re looking for a less permanent solution, the player watermark could be the way to go. Share or embed your content with anyone you like and still have your brand prominently visible at all times. But be cautious: this is not a permanent watermark and could be removed by someone with ill intent.

If this still doesn’t put your mind at ease when sharing exclusive content, you can even combine all three options! Better safe than sorry, right?!

Why use watermarking?

Watermarking offers several benefits for protecting your media:

Security with external collaborators

Dynamic watermarking allows you to safely share content with external partners or freelancers, adding a layer of accountability by uniquely tagging each receiver. This ensures you know exactly who accessed (and potentially leaked) your content. In addition we also keep a full audit trail of the visitors so that we can always help you investigate who viewed which video.

Clear deterrent against unauthorized use

Visible watermarks with personal identifiers like email addresses discourage users from unauthorized sharing, as any leak can be traced back to the original viewer, minimizing misuse risk.

Protection for exclusive content

When sharing exclusive previews or test materials, dynamic watermarking adds peace of mind. Even if content leaks, it’s immediately clear who was responsible—essential for high-value or early-release media.
