Restricting download access to previews
When sharing a file in MediaLab, you can control whether recipients are able to download the preview file.
Disabling Preview Downloads
- When creating your share link, untick the Download preview option.
- If no download options are selected, the share page will not display a Download button.
- Recipients will still be able to watch or view the media online.
Note: This only applies to preview files. For details on restricting access to source files, see the article Restricting Access to the Source File When Sharing.
Important Considerations
Even if download options are disabled, there is no absolute way to prevent someone from saving a copy of what they can view.
- Files must be temporarily downloaded to the recipient’s device in the background during playback.
- Tech-savvy users may capture video streams, take screenshots, or record their screen.
- For highly sensitive content, carefully consider whether uploading it online is appropriate.
Best Practices to Minimize Unwanted Downloads
- Send personal links – If a file leaks, you can identify the account or link that shared it.
- Use personal accounts – Provide regular recipients with their own MediaLab account, creating an audit trail.
- Set short expiry intervals – Create links that expire quickly (e.g., within two weeks).
- Add watermarks – Particularly useful for public sharing to discourage unauthorized use.
- Use custom formats – Enterprise customers can request special formats (e.g., reduced bitrate video, custom image specs) for safer sharing.
