Maximum views setting for shared media
When sharing media in MediaLab, you can increase security by setting a maximum number of views for each share link.
Why Use Maximum Views?
- Personal links are safer than general links, since each recipient gets their own unique URL.
- If a personal link is leaked, it can be traced back to the recipient.
- To limit damage from leaked links, you can set a maximum view count. Once the limit is reached, the link expires and can no longer be used.
Administrators can also define a default maximum for all share links, which users can adjust if needed.
Practical Use
- Most personal share links are only opened a handful of times.
- Setting a sensible limit (e.g., 50 views) prevents abuse if a link is posted publicly.
- For some use cases, you can increase the maximum or disable the limit entirely (unlimited views).
Note: For a good viewing experience, once a recipient has opened a link, they can continue watching it for a short time even if the maximum has been exceeded.
Availability
- The maximum views option is available in the general share form and via the API.
- Accessible to all users with sharing permissions.
For extra security, consider combining this with other best practices, such as disabling downloads when not needed.
